Chiropractic is a health care system, one that is best known for pain relief. But in actuality, it is much more than that.
We all know that the brain is what controls every system within our bodies. From how often our hearts beat, to when we blink our eyes, to our pancreases secreting insulin after a meal. EVERYTHING is controlled by our brains. Furthermore, our spinal cord and nervous system is how the brain communicates with our bodies. Our spinal column is made of 24 independent vertebrae; is what allows the body to move, twist, and bend through every motion of a busy day. It also encases and helps protect the delicate central nervous system that controls and coordinates every muscle, tissue and organ of the body. This is why we (chiropractors) believe the first step to an active lifestyle is a properly functioning spine.
When two or more adjacent vertebrae are not functioning together properly, it is what many chiropractors refer to as a subluxation. 'Pressure' on the cord or the nerves may cause them to increase or decrease their normal amount of “flow”. In order to restore the normal flow of our nerves, Chiropractic is the system used to correct those sublaxations; which can reduce pain, increase range of motion, and allow the body to heal itself. In addition to the chiropractic adjustment, many chiropractors also work with the body's muscles. This may take the form of 'myofascial release', stretches and/or strengthening exercises.
Recent Chiropractic research studies have shown that the therapeutic benefits of care include, but are not limited to;
Sciatica: Improvement rates were calculated at being 72% effective. Much better than the 50% from steroid injections and the 20% success afforded by Physical Therapy alone.
Low Back Pain and Neck Pain: Chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.
Headaches: One trial showed 22% of those under Chiropractic care enjoyed a 90% decrease in frequency and 49% had a reduction in intensity.
Colic and Ear Infection: A 2012 study published in Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics found that chiropractic adjustments greatly reduced colic symptoms.
Frozen Shoulder: In a study including 50 patients, 16 completely resolved. 25 improved 75-90% . 8 improved 50-75% and 1 showed 0-50% improvement.
To summarize, Chiropractic adjustments can help your get your body in position to heal itself, improve immune function, keeps you healthier and improves one's abilities to move, perform and even think more clearly.
