What are your specialties? What do you like to treat and why?
My training is in marriage, family and child therapy, which encompasses a wide range of topics and issues. Grief, Adoption, marriage therapy, post-traumatic stress disorder, divorce, anxiety, depression, women’s issues, dealing with ADHD in children and adults, self-esteem issues… are what I see the most of.
I believe that in general, people are driven to love and be loved. Difficult events and emotions can alter our perceptions of self and others. Thus compromising our ability to give and receive this love. On a deep level, I believe people have the ability to overcome, grow, and learn from the harder aspects of life. It is within our struggles where we ask the questions, find the answers, and become who we are meant to be. Change is possible! I consider it a privilege and an honor to walk with people through these places in their life journey.
How long have you been in Alaska? And why did you move here?
I was born here in 1969. My parents are also lifelong Alaskans as is my husband.
Where have you lived before Alaska?
For my undergraduate and graduate school education, I chose to attend schools in Southern California however decided to come back to Alaska to start a family and launch my career.
While in high school and college I worked many different jobs, including waitressing, clerical positions, and gas station attendant. At one point, I taught horseback riding lessons and worked in a therapeutic equine program with children and adults who experience different forms of disabilities. Upon graduating, I worked for the Women’s Shelter for Nonviolent Living and the Resource Agency's Adult Center in Fairbanks.
Hobbies and other interests?
I am constantly looking for the ways I am being led and guided to grow in my spiritual journey with God. Also, I love to read, practice yoga, and have a passion for horses. Eventually I would love to work on reintroducing them back into my life. In addition, I enjoy traveling to warm places, kayaking, and scuba diving (which I am certified in).
I married my high school love and we have been together for many years with him. We have two children. We are blessed in so many ways. Luckily, we have both our parents in Fairbanks and spend lots of family time together. My husband works in tourism and has endless fascinating knowledge about Alaska. He and both our kids are crazy about hockey.
